Contents

Summary of Contents: This Nepalese manuscript is composite and consists of two codicological units. The main codicological unit (kernel) is written on black paper (nīlapattra) with golden ink (suvarṇākṣara) and contains the Mañjuśrīnāmasaṅgīti, a popular Buddhist tantric work, which consists primarily of 162 verses associated with Mañjuśrī, the Bodhisattva of wisdom. According to the colophon, the manuscript was written in 1570 CE by the vajrācārya Vijayacandra in the Maṇisaṅgha monastery (mahāvihāra ) in Kathmandu, under the reign of king Mahendramalla (ca 1560–1574). It was commissioned by the Buddhist monk Mayalasiṃhacandra, who was based in the Kīrttipuṇya monastery (mahāvihāra), located in the same city. They contain twenty-five stanzas of a text (a hymn?) in a form of Sanskritized Newārī. Folios 1v and 2r are decorated with miniatures of the Buddha Śākyamuni (?) in the center of a lotus and an eight-armed unidentified Bodhisattva figure (?). The second codicological unit, written in 1822, consists of six white paper folios written with red ink, added at the beginning of the manuscript with the last one pasted on the black-paper flyleaf. Originally it did not have the string holes and therefore they were pierced through it when it was added to the kernel, thus obliterating some characters.
