Rubric: F. 1r: Mughabódha: or the Beauty of Knowledge or The Recovery of one Entransed. An excellent Grammar, comprehensive, methodical and concise. The version was written hastily, when the translator was a mere beginner, and must not be relied on.

Support: Paper. Three different watermarks: Fleur-de-lis, with a coat of arms; below monogram ‘GR’; fleur-de-lis, in a crowned shield, below monogram ‘GR’; Name, J WHATMAN; and Name, I TAYLOR.
Extent: xiii + 114
Dimensions (binding): 24 × 38 cm.
Foliation: Devanāgarī numerals in black and red ink, top-left margin, verso.
Foliation: Arabic numerals in pencil, top-right margin, recto.

Condition

Complete.

Textblock is in good condition. Binding is unstable, with considerable worm damage on the pasteboard.

Binding

A late 18th or early 19th-century brown leather binding over pasteboard, with floaral frame tooled in gold on the covers and shelfmark number on the spine. Cardboard cover box.

History

Origin: 1787–1790 AD.

‘The initials of Sir William Jones, with the date 1 May, 1787, and 2 May, 1787 are found at the bottom of f. v. In the margin of f. 17v, there is an entry, ‘Left off 11 Oct, 1790.’.’

Given in 1833 by Julius Hare and Augustus Hare from William Jones' personal library.
