William Jones ' handwriting in black ink.

Binding

A late 18th or early 19th-century brown leather binding over pasteboard, with shelfmark number tooled in gold on the spine. Cardboard cover box.

History

Origin: 1789–1792 CE. A statement on f. 145r: "finished 27 Nov. 1789" gives probably the date at which the Sanskrit copy was finished. The date 21 Nov. 1789 occurs at the end of adhyāya 11, f. 137v. An entry at the end of adhyāya1, f. 6v says: "Read for the last time 12 March 1790." In the margins of ff. 108r, 109v, 111r, and 111v the following dates occur: 18 Nov. 91,24 Nov. 91, and 1 Dec. 91, hence the date 22 Febr on f. 120 must be meant for 22 Febr. 1792. The translation and notes seem, therefore, to have been made between 1790 and 1792. William Jones' translation was published in 1792.
