Devanāgarī, beautifully written.
Scribes: pañcikās 1 to 5 and 7 are written by the same hand. The scribe calls himself Nārāyaṇa Goḷavalkara in the colophon of pañcikā 1, and Nārāyaṇa, son of Mahādeva Guṇavallīkara, in the colophons of pañcikās 3, 5 and 7 (Guṇavallīkaraityupanāmakamahādevasya sūtanārāyaṇena likhitam). Pañcikā 7 was written by Rāmakṛṣṇa, son (suta) of Mahādeva Guṇavallīkara. The scribe of pañcikā 8 does not give his name.
History
the following dates are given at the end of the pañcikās:
(1) saṃvat 1896, śake 1761 ⟨1839⟩ sādhāraṇasaṃvatsare jyeṣṭhaśutdha 1 samāptaṃ |
(2) śake satrāśeṃ sāṭha vilaṃbīnāmasaṃvatsare udagayane grīṣma ṛtū āṣāḍhaśuklatrayodaśā gurūvāre samāptam ǁ This is a. d. 1838 (= śake 1760).
(3) śake satrāśeṃ hemalaṃbīnāmasaṃvatsare udagayane śaśira ṛtū pauṣe māsī kṛṣṇapakṣe dvādaśyāṃ bhomavāsare … samāptaṃ | This is a. d. 1837 (= śake 1759).
(4) śake satrāśeṃ 60 vilaṃbīnāmasaṃvatsare dakṣiṇāyane varṣātau śrāvaṇe māse śuklapakṣe nāgapaṃcamyāṃ guruvāsare taddinīdaṃ pustakaṃ samāptam ǁ This is a. d. 1838 (= śake 1760).
(5) śake satrāśeṃ yekasaṣṭha vikārīnāmasaṃvatsare udagayane grīṣma ’ṛtū adhīkajyeṣṭhe māse śuklapakṣe pratipattithau bhomavāsare taddinedaṃ pustakaṃ Avaṃtikāyāṃ mahākālavane harasitdhiviśālākṣetre kṣiprātīre samāpto’yam ǁ a. d. 1839 (= śake 1761).
(6) śake satrāśeṃ paṃcāhattara ǁ 1775 ǁ pramādīnāmasaṃvatsare udagayane caitre māse śuddhasaptamyāṃ | i. e. a. d. 1853.
(7) śake satrāśeṃ yekuṇasāṭha | hemalaṃbīnāmasaṃvatsare pauṣakṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṃ saumyavāsare samāptaṃ ǁ a. d. 1837 (= śake 1759).
(8) śake satrāśeṃ paṃcāvan vījayanāmasaṃvatsare āśvīnakṛṣṇacaturthyāṃ samāpto ’yaṃ ǁ This is a. d. 1833 (= śake 1755).
Provenance and Acquisition
Bought by the Bodleian, in October, 1892, from Quaritch’s catalogue 128 (no. 524). Inside the cover there is a signature ‘John Wilson,’ and on f. i the entry: ‘Aitareya Bráhmaṇa. Taken at the capture of Béṭ.’
